Road to Argentis - Part III Sons of Horus Rules

So while the painting is going through the long, boring part of coloring in black I guess it's time to start talking tactics and ideas. I think the best place to start is by looking at the rules for the Sons of Horus Legion.  The 16th Legion are a group of lads known for finding the sensitive parts of their enemies and smashing as much meaty, metal fist as they can into it so that the rest of the body dies in the shock wave. The rules express this as being better at shooting weapons up close and a re-roll to reserve rules. The special units for the legion are the special Justaerin Terminators and the Reaver Attack squad.  The Anvillus Drop Pod was also originally an exclusive unit for Sons of Horus, but that isn't the case anymore so I guess we will just ignore that little bit. Ok, lets get some soup-to-nuts talk going on here.  The Holy Text is sacred. Sons of Horus/ Luna Wolves - 16th Legion Traits Bitter Pride: Sons of Horus can't use warl...

Road to Argentis - Part II

A week of painting well worth it in my opinion. I have achieved the color I was after for the Sons of Horus sea foam green. I am already loving the shading that managed to achieve and I hope that it continues to stay this way after I put the other colors on the model. I think the models currently appear brighter than the end model will due to the lack of blacks and golds on the model, but it adheres to my usual style of painting. I call it Dylan's god-awful-until-the-end paint jobs! So the next step in the process was taking the models that have the 50/50 Lupercal: Abaddon Black and airbrush on the pure Lupercal Green highlight. After doing this the model really didn't seem all that different due to the muted colors, but the shadows were now in place and ready for the finishing stroke! I take pure GW Sybarite Green and give the models that final level of highlight. I have learned over the years that I am not a light scientist and I just put the color where I think it ne...

Road to Argentis - Part I

Ok, well here we go, its prime time........ok, I am done with the puns. While this isn't everything that I am going to need to paint by the time this is over, this is everything that doesn't need some kind of hobbying to finish. Some models still need shoulder icons and some greenstuffing before the paint is applied.....looking at you storm eagle....... One of my main goals with this project is to push the contrast to make the green look as good as Dylany possible. Sea foam green is not a color that is commonly seen in military history so the results are varied from what I have found. A quick google search will bring up all different kinds of looking Sons of Horus, but I just don't really get inspired by the super dark colors that are commonly found on the internet. I am always sold some DaRk AnD gRiM FaNtAsY justification, but I think its more of a lack of knowledge of how colors work. #Sorrynotsorry I actually got the scheme from an off-handed comment I heard while I ...

Road to Argentis - Introduction

Well it was only a matter of time before my Horus Heresy addiction made its way to this blog. I am a known hardcore Blood Angel player, but I found myself in an interesting situation. I was asked to play Traitors for an event I am going to Labor Day weekend called Argentis Eternal Narrative Event.  I will be traveling to Central Florida carrying a fully painted army or die trying. I bought Sons of Horus a few months ago and then I caught Corona right around the time I was painting them. I spent about a month on the mend and never felt the need or urge pick up the brush to paint green since then since no one was playing due to COVID. I would like to think my love in The Great Angel was trying to push me away from destroying the dream of the Imperium of Mankind. Credit: Games Workshop Well the chance is here. I have planned out a 3000 point list for the narrative event and a 2000 point list for the Centurion even afterward. I am going to try and post my progress as I go and m...

Operation Babylon Game VII - Objectively-Great Town

Pre-Game The battle for the tombs is over, and Rommel's NDaK was pushed back by the Devil Dogs of the United States Marine Corps. Battered, but most assuredly not defeated, Rommel rallies his forces and attempts to steal a win out of the strained situation. The tombs and their relics are in the hands of the Allies, but they still have to get them back to their CLIO scientists and labs. The nearby town of Albu Bali is the closest piece of civilization that has the facilities necessary to land a plane big enough to evacuate the relics. Rommel sees an opportunity and orders his forces to grab their gear and set out.  The town had been mostly spared by this point of the war with only minimal interest from both sides. Rommel's enemies must have already been thinking the same thing as marine scouts were spotted by recon grenadiers on the other side of the town. With the rest of the invasion needing his attention, he left the task to Christoph. Master Sergeant Christoph quick...

Painting with Thoughts - Panzer Crew

Hello wargamers! I have been painting and modeling like a madman. I guess there is always a silver lining even during this whole COVID mess. I have even had the opportunity to do a few commission paint jobs which helps with the decrease in income that I am sure most of us are feeling. I just tell myself that the world is giving me the chance to keep my painting muscles strong. However; for the weekend I decided I was going to just stop and pound out a personal project. I am working on 28mm German and American armies themed around my favorite battle of World War II. The Battle of the Bulge The Battle of the Bulge reaped a terrible toll on both sides of the conflict with thousands of troops dead in the forests of Belgium. Operation Nordwind as it was known on the Axis side was the last desperate push to get the democratic nations out of the war so that all of the resources of Nazi Germany could be thrown at the steamrolling Soviet Union armies that were tearing eastern Europe apart. ...
